Chicken Meat Market Size in Vietnam
After three years of growth, the Vietnamese chicken meat market decreased by -3.2% to $X in 2021. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +32.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 65%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
In 2021, the average yield of chicken meat in Vietnam stood at X kg per head, stabilizing at 2020 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the yield increased by 6.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average chicken meat yield attained the peak level in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
The number of animals slaughtered for chicken meat production in Vietnam surged to X heads in 2021, rising by 30% against 2020. In general, the number of producing animals enjoyed resilient growth. Exports from Vietnam
In 2021, shipments abroad of chicken meat decreased by -20.2% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 555% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, chicken meat exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 855% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for chicken meat exports from Vietnam, with a 61% share of total exports. Moreover, chicken meat exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), sixfold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to +89.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+85.3% per year) and Japan (+27.8% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for chicken meat exports from Vietnam, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to China stood at +96.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+83.9% per year) and Japan (+22.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat export price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 17% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 46% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were South Korea ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) and Pakistan ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Hong Kong SAR (+5.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Chicken Meat Imports
Imports into Vietnam
In 2021, the amount of chicken meat imported into Vietnam shrank to X tons, reducing by -14.5% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 72%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, chicken meat imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Hong Kong SAR (X tons), the United States (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of chicken meat imports to Vietnam, with a combined 61% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +32.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest chicken meat suppliers to Vietnam were Hong Kong SAR ($X), the United States ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 63% share of total imports.
Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +28.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average chicken meat import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a deep setback. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the price for Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+3.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
