Sweet Potato Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese sweet potato market rose slightly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 8.5%. Sweet potato consumption peaked at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, sweet potato production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, production attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

The average yield of sweet potatoes in Vietnam rose markedly to X tons per ha in 2021, growing by 5.9% compared with 2020. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. The sweet potato yield peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, the harvested area of sweet potatoes in Vietnam dropped modestly to X ha, falling by -3.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 0.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sweet potato production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Vietnam

In 2021, sweet potato exports from Vietnam contracted markedly to X tons, shrinking by -25.3% on the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 198%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sweet potato exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 153%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons), China (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of sweet potato exports from Vietnam, with a combined 60% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Japan, Hong Kong SAR, Singapore and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 24%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +156.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) were the largest markets for sweet potato exported from Vietnam worldwide, with a combined 55% share of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +42.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sweet potato export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Malaysia (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Sweet Potato Imports

Imports into Vietnam

In 2020, supplies from abroad of sweet potatoes decreased by -81.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 561% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sweet potato imports dropped markedly to $X in 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 511% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2020, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Japan (X kg) were the main suppliers of sweet potato imports to Vietnam. Moreover, sweet potato imports in Lao People's Democratic Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +36.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Japan ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest sweet potato suppliers to Vietnam. Moreover, sweet potato imports in Lao People's Democratic Republic exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan, more than tenfold.

In terms of the main suppliers, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +32.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average sweet potato import price amounted to less than $X per ton, declining by 99.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
