In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the Vietnamese artificial and colloidal graphite market, when its value increased by 69% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a strong increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations decreased by -7.8% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 269%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 532%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for artificial and colloidal graphite exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 83% share of total exports. Moreover, artificial and colloidal graphite exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Indonesia (X tons), with a 25% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to South Korea amounted to +65.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (0.0% per year) and Indonesia (-12.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for artificial and colloidal graphite exported from Vietnam were South Korea ($X), India ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for 81% of total exports. Indonesia, Singapore and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Among the main countries of destination, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +134.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average artificial and colloidal graphite export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -52.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 564% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+63.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations, when their volume increased by 90% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a prominent increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 60% share of total imports. Moreover, artificial and colloidal graphite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), fourfold. The United States (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to +8.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+6.6% per year) and the United States (+12.8% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and the United States ($X) were the largest artificial and colloidal graphite suppliers to Vietnam, with a combined 88% share of total imports.

South Korea, with a CAGR of +29.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average artificial and colloidal graphite import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -24.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 75%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+108.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
