In 2021, overseas shipments of bleached sulphate pulp increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 124%. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for bleached sulphate pulp exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cambodia (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (X tons), with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled -7.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+6.5% per year) and Malaysia (-13.0% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for bleached sulphate pulp exports from Vietnam, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China totaled -6.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+9.7% per year) and Malaysia (-13.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average bleached sulphate pulp export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Singapore ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+3.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

For the sixth year in a row, Vietnam recorded growth in supplies from abroad of bleached sulphate pulp, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports posted a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bleached sulphate pulp imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 65% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bleached sulphate pulp to Vietnam, with a 40% share of total imports. Moreover, bleached sulphate pulp imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), threefold. Brazil (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia amounted to +24.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+0.8% per year) and Brazil (+5.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest bleached sulphate pulp suppliers to Vietnam were Indonesia ($X), the United States ($X) and Canada ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. Brazil, Sweden, Chile, Singapore, Thailand, Finland and Germany lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.

Among the main suppliers, Singapore, with a CAGR of +35.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average bleached sulphate pulp import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 33%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
