For the fourth consecutive year, the Vietnamese chewing gum market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -6.2% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a abrupt slump. Chewing gum consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, approx. X tons of chewing gum were exported from Vietnam; rising by 39% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chewing gum exports rose to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 41%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons) was the main destination for chewing gum exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 27% share of total exports. Moreover, chewing gum exports to the United Arab Emirates exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Saudi Arabia (X tons), threefold. Turkey (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United Arab Emirates totaled -7.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+19.1% per year) and Turkey (+32.9% per year).

In value terms, the United Arab Emirates ($X) remains the key foreign market for chewing gum exports from Vietnam, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Saudi Arabia ($X), with an 8.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United Arab Emirates was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Saudi Arabia (+19.7% per year) and Turkey (+33.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average chewing gum export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -24.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices to Iraq ($X per ton) and the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) and Morocco ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United Arab Emirates (+7.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

Chewing gum imports into Vietnam rose rapidly to X tons in 2021, growing by 12% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 97% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, chewing gum imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a moderate expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 76% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of chewing gum to Vietnam, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, chewing gum imports from the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), more than tenfold. The United Arab Emirates (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from the Philippines amounted to -4.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (-1.6% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+40.9% per year).

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest supplier of chewing gum to Vietnam, comprising 73% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Philippines was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+40.3% per year) and Australia (+152.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average chewing gum import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
