Common Clay Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese common clay market surged to $X in 2022, jumping by 17% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -9.8% against 2020 indices. Common clay consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of common clay was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports showed a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 480% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, common clay exports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 407%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The Philippines (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main destinations of common clay exports from Vietnam, with a combined 75% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +33.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for common clay exported from Vietnam were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), the UK ($X) and the Philippines ($X), together comprising 60% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +13.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average common clay export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Pakistan (+7.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, the amount of common clay imported into Vietnam rose remarkably to X tons, surging by 13% against the year before. Overall, imports posted a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 77%. Imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, common clay imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main suppliers of common clay imports to Vietnam, with a combined 78% share of total imports. Portugal, Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese) and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Portugal (with a CAGR of +216.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X) constituted the largest common clay suppliers to Vietnam, together accounting for 79% of total imports. Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese), Portugal and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
