The Vietnamese cow peas market soared to $X in 2021, with an increase of 222% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In 2021, overseas shipments of cow peas (dry) decreased by -56.7% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after eight years of growth. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cow peas exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,123%. The exports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Switzerland (X tons), China (X tons) and Norway (X tons) were the main destinations of cow peas exports from Vietnam, together comprising 71% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Norway (with a CAGR of +110.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Switzerland ($X), Japan ($X) and China ($X) were the largest markets for cow peas exported from Vietnam worldwide, with a combined 66% share of total exports. Norway, Germany, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
Norway, with a CAGR of +80.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average cow peas export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the average export price increased by 86% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+26.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Vietnam
In 2021, approx. X tons of cow peas (dry) were imported into Vietnam; with an increase of 294% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a significant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, cow peas imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Madagascar (X tons) constituted the largest cow peas supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 70% share of total imports. Moreover, cow peas imports from Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Madagascar totaled +65.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+41.9% per year) and India (+28.0% per year).
In value terms, Madagascar ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cow peas to Vietnam, comprising 43% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Myanmar ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Madagascar totaled +42.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Myanmar (+51.7% per year) and China (+38.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average cow peas import price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -54.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 17%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted notably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Myanmar ($X per ton), while the price for Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
