The Vietnamese dog and cat food market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a mild slump. Dog and cat food consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 134%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, dog and cat food exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 125%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for dog and cat food exports from Vietnam, with a 86% share of total exports. Moreover, dog and cat food exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), more than tenfold. Italy (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +60.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-0.7% per year) and Italy (+15.4% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for dog and cat food exports from Vietnam, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 2.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States stood at +64.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.3% per year) and Italy (+18.5% per year).

In 2021, the average dog and cat food export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 8.2%. The export price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($X per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+2.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of dog and cat food increased by 29% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 146% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dog and cat food imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 124%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest dog and cat food supplier to Vietnam, with a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, dog and cat food imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), more than tenfold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Italy amounted to +24.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+6.8% per year) and South Korea (+69.5% per year).

In value terms, the largest dog and cat food suppliers to Vietnam were Thailand ($X), Italy ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 67% share of total imports. These countries were followed by France, Ireland, Poland and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Ireland, with a CAGR of +232.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average dog and cat food import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a moderate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 77%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+25.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
