Electronic Chip Market Size in Vietnam

In 2021, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Vietnamese electronic chip market, when its value decreased by -15.1% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +60.6% against 2015 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In 2021, approx. X units of electronic chips were exported from Vietnam; jumping by 145% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 234% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, electronic chip exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 161%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

Hong Kong SAR (X units) was the main destination for electronic chip exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 34% share of total exports. Moreover, electronic chip exports to Hong Kong SAR exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, China (X units), twofold. The United States (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Hong Kong SAR amounted to +64.3%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+38.4% per year) and the United States (+49.1% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest markets for electronic chip exported from Vietnam worldwide, together comprising 72% of total exports. Singapore, Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands, Malaysia, Brazil, India and Mexico lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of +110.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average electronic chip export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 16%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to the United States ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+20.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

Electronic chip imports into Vietnam rose rapidly to X units in 2021, surging by 5.7% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 120%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, electronic chip imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

South Korea (X units), China (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) were the main suppliers of electronic chip imports to Vietnam, with a combined 74% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +49.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) constituted the largest electronic chip suppliers to Vietnam, with a combined 63% share of total imports.

The average electronic chip import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 7.3% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, electronic chip import price increased by +19.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 42%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ireland ($X per unit), while the price for the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
