Ferro-Silicon Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese ferro-silicon market dropped dramatically to $X in 2022, waning by -20.7% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, saw a resilient increase. Ferro-silicon consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of ferro-silicon decreased by -16.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 802% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-silicon exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 773% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Japan (X tons) was the main destination for ferro-silicon exports from Vietnam, with a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand (X kg), with less than 0.1% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with less than 0.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Japan totaled +8.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-55.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-65.0% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for ferro-silicon exports from Vietnam, comprising 100% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with less than 0.1% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with less than 0.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Japan amounted to +9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-54.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-62.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average ferro-silicon export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -9.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+5.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, purchases abroad of ferro-silicon decreased by -13% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, posted a slight expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 164%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ferro-silicon imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 155%. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Russia (X tons) were the main suppliers of ferro-silicon imports to Vietnam, with a combined 95% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +123.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, China ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Russia ($X) constituted the largest ferro-silicon suppliers to Vietnam, together accounting for 94% of total imports.

Among the main suppliers, Russia, with a CAGR of +106.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average ferro-silicon import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -14.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 51%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
