The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 111%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, folding boxboard exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 180% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of folding boxboard exports from Vietnam, with a combined 76% share of total exports. China, Hong Kong SAR, Australia, Myanmar, South Korea, Cambodia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +60.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the largest markets for folding boxboard exported from Vietnam worldwide, with a combined 82% share of total exports. Australia, China, Myanmar, South Korea, Hong Kong SAR, Cambodia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +74.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average folding boxboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -6.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 33%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+9.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, overseas purchases of folding boxboard increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports posted a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, folding boxboard imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of folding boxboard imports to Vietnam, with a combined 73% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), Sweden, Thailand, Brazil, Japan, Finland and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +69.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest folding boxboard suppliers to Vietnam were China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 73% of total imports. These countries were followed by Taiwan (Chinese), Sweden, Thailand, Japan, Brazil, Singapore and Finland, which together accounted for a further 21%.

Among the main suppliers, Brazil, with a CAGR of +68.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average folding boxboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 6.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
