Fresh Chicken Cut Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese fresh chicken cut market contracted to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -7.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Fresh chicken cut consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut production dropped to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports from Vietnam

For the third year in a row, Vietnam recorded growth in shipments abroad of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken, which increased by 32% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 843% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 798%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Austria (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main destinations of fresh chicken cut exports from Vietnam, together comprising 99% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Hong Kong SAR (with a CAGR of +33.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, the largest markets for fresh chicken cut exported from Vietnam were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and Austria ($X), with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +39.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Export Prices by Country

The average fresh chicken cut export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 8.5% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, fresh chicken cut export price increased by +13.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Panama ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Austria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Panama (+9.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, overseas purchases of fresh or chilled cuts of chicken increased by 32% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, fresh chicken cut imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tunisia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main suppliers of fresh chicken cut imports to Vietnam, with a combined 60% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +26.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In value terms, Poland ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Ireland ($X) were the largest fresh chicken cut suppliers to Vietnam, together accounting for 69% of total imports. Italy, Tunisia, Turkey, Jordan, Canada, Pakistan, Hungary and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +11.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average fresh chicken cut import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 27% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+25.7%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
