In 2021, after four years of decline, there was growth in the Vietnamese knife and scissors market, when its value increased by 4.8% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decline. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, knife and scissors production expanded markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 225% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Vietnam
In 2021, exports of knives, scissors and blades from Vietnam skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 54% against the year before. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, knife and scissors exports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 33%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The United States (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the main destinations of knife and scissors exports from Vietnam, with a combined 57% share of total exports. The UK, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, China, South Korea, Russia and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +185.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and Germany ($X) were the largest markets for knife and scissors exported from Vietnam worldwide, together comprising 65% of total exports. These countries were followed by South Korea, the UK, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Canada, China, Australia and Russia, which together accounted for a further 24%.
Russia, with a CAGR of +186.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average knife and scissors export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -28.7% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 21%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the UK ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+10.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Knife And Scissors Imports
Imports into Vietnam
In 2021, approx. X tons of knives, scissors and blades were imported into Vietnam; with an increase of 44% against 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, knife and scissors imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 184%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest knife and scissors supplier to Vietnam, with a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, knife and scissors imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Japan (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X tons), with a 3.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China amounted to -1.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-26.9% per year) and Thailand (-7.0% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of knives, scissors and blades to Vietnam, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 5.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled -8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Japan (-20.2% per year) and Thailand (-3.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average knife and scissors import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -23.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 29% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+9.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
