For the fourth year in a row, the Vietnamese laser market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 63% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption showed significant growth. Laser consumption peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

For the fifth consecutive year, Vietnam recorded growth in shipments abroad of lasers, other than laser diodes, which increased by 10% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 254%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X units) was the main destination for laser exports from Vietnam, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, laser exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X units), threefold. Japan (X units) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Singapore amounted to +95.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+64.7% per year) and Japan (+43.9% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for laser exports from Vietnam, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Singapore amounted to +98.7%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+48.2% per year) and the UK (+69.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average laser export price stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 21% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, laser export price increased by +68.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 50%. The export price peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to South Korea (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, South Korea (X units) constituted the largest supplier of laser to Vietnam, with a 56% share of total imports. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X units), with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from South Korea stood at +139.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+128.9% per year) and Germany (+142.6% per year).

In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of laser to Vietnam, comprising 54% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from South Korea amounted to +91.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+101.6% per year) and Singapore (+81.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average laser import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, shrinking by -14.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while the price for Japan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
