The Vietnamese plain postcard market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption showed a measured increase. For the seventh consecutive year, Vietnam recorded decline in shipments abroad of letter cards, plain postcards and correspondence cards, which decreased by -12.9% to X kg in 2021. In general, exports faced a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, plain postcard exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a deep slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 5.3%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X kg) was the main destination for plain postcard exports from Vietnam, with a 53% share of total exports. Moreover, plain postcard exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X kg), twofold. Italy (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States amounted to +1.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-14.2% per year) and Italy (-34.7% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for letter cards, plain postcards and correspondence cards exports from Vietnam, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Italy, with an 8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-9.4% per year) and Italy (-33.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average plain postcard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 35%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Australia ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) and Italy ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+11.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, imports of letter cards, plain postcards and correspondence cards into Vietnam contracted remarkably to X tons, reducing by -32.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 139% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020, and then fell rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, plain postcard imports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Japan (X tons) constituted the largest plain postcard supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 63% share of total imports. Moreover, plain postcard imports from Japan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), threefold. Italy (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Japan amounted to +69.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+41.1% per year) and Italy (+66.9% per year).

In value terms, Japan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of letter cards, plain postcards and correspondence cards to Vietnam, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Japan stood at +57.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+36.1% per year) and Italy (+53.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average plain postcard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 33% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 45%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were South Korea ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+2.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
