Lignite imports into Vietnam expanded remarkably to X tons in 2022, rising by 13% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 8,222%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lignite imports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, imports posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 6,313% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest lignite supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 62% share of total imports. Moreover, lignite imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), threefold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Indonesia stood at +29.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+75.5% per year) and China (+19.1% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of lignites to Vietnam, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Indonesia totaled +31.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+63.6% per year) and the United States (+45.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average lignite import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, enjoyed noticeable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the average import price increased by 799% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Russia (+78.0%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
