In value terms, magnesium exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 79%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) were the main destinations of magnesium exports from Vietnam, with a combined 99.9% share of total exports.

In 2021, the average magnesium export price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -8.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 17% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Indonesia (+18.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.
Magnesium Imports
Imports into Vietnam
In 2021, the amount of magnesium imported into Vietnam surged to X tons, picking up by 21% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 189% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, magnesium imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 171% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest magnesium supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, magnesium imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), sixfold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +39.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+39.5% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+21.5% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of magnesium to Vietnam, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +34.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+34.8% per year) and South Korea (+40.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average magnesium import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a mild shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
