Mercury Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese mercury market soared to $X in 2021, picking up by 273% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption continues to indicate perceptible growth. Mercury consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Vietnam

In 2021, overseas shipments of mercuries decreased by -16.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 436% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mercury exports shrank to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 1,157% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

India (X tons) was the main destination for mercury exports from Vietnam, with a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, mercury exports to India exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Togo (X tons), fivefold. Bolivia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.4% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to India amounted to +14.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Togo (+8.3% per year) and Bolivia (-57.1% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for mercuries exports from Vietnam, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Bolivia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to India amounted to +21.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Bolivia (-65.3% per year) and Kenya (+57.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average mercury export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 9.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 135% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Togo (+13.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Mercury Imports

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, the amount of mercuries imported into Vietnam skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 22% compared with the year before. Overall, imports continue to indicate a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 7,845%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, mercury imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 7,189%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Tajikistan (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of mercury to Vietnam, accounting for a 87% share of total imports. Moreover, mercury imports from Tajikistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Tajikistan amounted to +43.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+139.5% per year) and Morocco (+6.2% per year).

In value terms, Tajikistan ($X) constituted the largest supplier of mercuries to Vietnam, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 27% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Tajikistan stood at +35.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+67.7% per year) and Morocco (+2.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average mercury import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 70% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Tajikistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (-3.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
