Piper Pepper Market Size in Vietnam

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the Vietnamese piper pepper market, when its value decreased by -14.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted temperate growth. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -1.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, piper pepper exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 35%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for piper pepper exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 28% share of total exports. Moreover, piper pepper exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United Arab Emirates (X tons), fourfold. India (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 6.3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the United States stood at +16.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+6.2% per year) and India (+11.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the key foreign market for piper pepper exports from Vietnam, comprising 32% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 6% share of total exports. It was followed by India, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the United States amounted to +8.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-4.6% per year) and India (+2.4% per year).

The average piper pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -10.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 23%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Iran ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Philippines (-1.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of piper pepper, when their volume decreased by -9.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 129% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, piper pepper imports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 198%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main suppliers of piper pepper imports to Vietnam, with a combined 81% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Cambodia (with a CAGR of +43.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.
