Photographic Film Market Size in Vietnam
The Vietnamese photographic film market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +82.5% against 2015 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Photographic Film Exports
Exports from Vietnam
In 2021, shipments abroad of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed decreased by -40.2% to X square meters, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a dramatic slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 75%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, photographic film exports fell rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a precipitous curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X square meters) was the main destination for photographic film exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, photographic film exports to Thailand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Turkey (X square meters), threefold. Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Thailand stood at -20.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Turkey (-31.7% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (-24.1% per year).
In value terms, the largest markets for photographic film exported from Vietnam were Hong Kong SAR ($X), Norway ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 58% share of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, Norway, with a CAGR of +4.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.
Export Prices by Country
The average photographic film export price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, reducing by -24.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per square meter in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per square meter), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam
In 2021, imports of photographic plates and film, photographic paper, paperboard and textiles and instant print film, sensitized, unexposed into Vietnam skyrocketed to X square meters, increasing by 78% against the previous year. In general, imports posted a strong increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, photographic film imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -29.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X square meters) constituted the largest photographic film supplier to Vietnam, with a 56% share of total imports. Moreover, photographic film imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X square meters), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Japan (X square meters), with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China stood at +13.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+67.8% per year) and Japan (+6.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest photographic film suppliers to Vietnam were China ($X), Japan ($X) and the United States ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Belgium, South Korea, Germany and the UK, which together accounted for a further 23%.
In terms of the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +61.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average photographic film import price stood at $X per square meter in 2021, waning by -48.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2020 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per square meter), while the price for Malaysia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United States (+11.2%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
