Plastic Container Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese plastic container market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, picking up by 7.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Plastic Container Production in Vietnam

In value terms, plastic container production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -10.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 110% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Plastic Container Exports

Exports from Vietnam

In 2021, overseas shipments of plastic containers were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, plastic container exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic container exports from Vietnam, with a combined 50% share of total exports. South Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore, Mongolia, India, Malaysia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 38%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +75.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for plastic container exported from Vietnam were the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and Cambodia ($X), together comprising 51% of total exports. South Korea, China, Thailand, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Philippines, the UK and Mongolia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +76.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average plastic container export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 25%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mongolia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Thailand (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Plastic Container Imports

Imports into Vietnam

In 2021, supplies from abroad of plastic containers decreased by -5.6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 66%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, plastic container imports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 68%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic container to Vietnam, accounting for a 46% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic container imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Japan (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China stood at +22.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+13.9% per year) and Japan (+2.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic containers to Vietnam, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from China totaled +17.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+14.9% per year) and Japan (+3.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average plastic container import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Japan ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton), while the price for Singapore ($X per ton) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
