Polycarbonate Market Size in Vietnam

In 2022, the Vietnamese polycarbonate market decreased by -14.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption, however, posted a resilient increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports from Vietnam

Polycarbonate exports from Vietnam contracted remarkably to X tons in 2022, shrinking by -16.9% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 345%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.

In value terms, polycarbonate exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 275%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

China (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main destinations of polycarbonate exports from Vietnam, together comprising 76% of total exports. Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Mexico and the United States lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 18%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +143.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Malaysia ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the largest markets for polycarbonate exported from Vietnam worldwide, together accounting for 76% of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Hong Kong SAR, Mexico and the United States, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +137.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average polycarbonate export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -13.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average export price increased by 52%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the highest price was recorded for prices to Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mexico ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Brazil (+53.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, supplies from abroad of polycarbonates (in primary forms) decreased by -9% to X tons for the first time since 2011, thus ending a ten-year rising trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 34%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, polycarbonate imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Korea (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of polycarbonate imports to Vietnam, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +93.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polycarbonate suppliers to Vietnam were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Pakistan and Spain, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +73.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average polycarbonate import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Saudi Arabia (+5.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
