In 2022, the Vietnamese preserved asparagus market increased by 0.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 826%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, preserved asparagus exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, faced a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 1,298%. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia (X kg) was the main destination for preserved asparagus exports from Vietnam, with a 65% share of total exports. Moreover, preserved asparagus exports to Russia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X kg), fourfold. The Czech Republic (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Russia stood at -18.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-21.3% per year) and the Czech Republic (-27.8% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X) remains the key foreign market for preserved asparagus exports from Vietnam, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Czech Republic ($X), with a 13% share of total exports. It was followed by Austria, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Russia stood at -16.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Czech Republic (-26.4% per year) and Austria (-17.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average preserved asparagus export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, preserved asparagus export price decreased by -12.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 51% against the previous year. In 2022, overseas purchases of preserved asparagus were finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a sharp curtailment. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled -23.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-14.9% per year) and Italy (-17.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of preserved asparagus to Vietnam, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China amounted to -19.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-5.0% per year) and Italy (-1.4% per year).

In 2022, the average preserved asparagus import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, preserved asparagus import price increased by +1.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average import price increased by 49% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
