Pumpkin Market Size in Vietnam

In 2022, the Vietnamese pumpkin market decreased by -29.7% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight expansion. Pumpkin consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Pumpkin Production in Vietnam

In value terms, pumpkin production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Pumpkin production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The average yield of pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Vietnam totaled less than X kg per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the year before. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pumpkin (squash and gourds) production in Vietnam totaled less than X ha, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports showed a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 133% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pumpkin exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 264% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for pumpkin exports from Vietnam, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, pumpkin exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malaysia (X tons), with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +18.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+17.0% per year) and Malaysia (+17.7% per year).

In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for pumpkin exported from Vietnam worldwide, together accounting for 78% of total exports. Japan, Singapore and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +56.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average pumpkin export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pumpkin export price decreased by -4.5% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+14.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, the amount of pumpkin (squash and gourds) imported into Vietnam declined sharply to X tons, falling by -46.4% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 930%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank significantly in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin imports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 915% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) was the main pumpkin supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 98% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan (X tons), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +13.4%.

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of pumpkin (squash and gourds) to Vietnam, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 0.4% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +12.4%.

Import Prices by Country

The average pumpkin import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Japan totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+1.0%).
