Recovered Paper Market Size in Vietnam

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in the Vietnamese recovered paper market, when its value decreased by -19.2% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a significant expansion. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Indonesia (X tons) was the main destination for recovered paper exports from Vietnam, with a 48% share of total exports. Moreover, recovered paper exports to Indonesia exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Singapore (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Thailand (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Indonesia amounted to -11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Singapore (-11.6% per year) and Thailand (-13.6% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the key foreign market for recovered paper exports from Vietnam, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 9.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Indonesia totaled -11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (-10.1% per year) and Singapore (-16.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average recovered paper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

After six years of growth, overseas purchases of recovered paper decreased by -9.6% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 103% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, recovered paper imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 90%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

The United States (X tons), Japan (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) were the main suppliers of recovered paper imports to Vietnam, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Australia, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 14%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +53.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest recovered paper suppliers to Vietnam were the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports. Australia, France, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 13%.

In terms of the main suppliers, Spain, with a CAGR of +43.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average recovered paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -15.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 54%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were the United States ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Italy ($X per ton) and South Korea ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (-0.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
