Paddy Rice Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese paddy rice market fell to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -4.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a mild downturn. In 2021, exports of paddy rice from Vietnam surged to X tons, growing by 18% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 526%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 559% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The Philippines (X tons) was the main destination for paddy rice exports from Vietnam, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

Paddy rice imports into Vietnam expanded remarkably to X tons in 2021, increasing by 6.8% compared with the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paddy rice imports stood at $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cambodia (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Vietnam, accounting for a 84% share of total imports. Moreover, paddy rice imports from Cambodia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), sixfold. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Cambodia stood at +233.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-22.7% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+56.4% per year).

In value terms, Cambodia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of paddy rice to Vietnam, comprising 84% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Cambodia totaled +222.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-24.5% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+52.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average paddy rice import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for Cambodia ($X per ton) and India ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-2.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
