In 2021, the Vietnamese saccharin market increased by 44% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, consumption enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, after four years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of saccharin and its salts, when their volume increased by 250% to X kg. Overall, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The exports peaked at X kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, saccharin exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 304% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Lao People's Democratic Republic (X kg) was the main destination for saccharin exports from Vietnam, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, saccharin exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Cambodia (X kg), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Lao People's Democratic Republic stood at +12.4%.

In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for saccharin and its salts exports from Vietnam, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Lao People's Democratic Republic totaled +25.1%.

In 2021, the average saccharin export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, saccharin export price increased by +81.7% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 18%. Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cambodia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Lao People's Democratic Republic totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Lao People's Democratic Republic (+11.3%).

Imports into Vietnam

Saccharin imports into Vietnam skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, jumping by 49% on the previous year. Overall, imports saw a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, saccharin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 55%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

China (X tons), Switzerland (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of saccharin imports to Vietnam, with a combined 97% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +115.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Switzerland ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the largest saccharin suppliers to Vietnam, together comprising 96% of total imports.

In 2021, the average saccharin import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -5.2% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Japan ($X per ton) and Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) and Switzerland ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+6.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
