Sesame Seed Market Size in Vietnam
The Vietnamese sesame seed market reached $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sesame seed production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 79%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, the average sesame seed yield in Vietnam amounted to X kg per ha, remaining stable against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 15%. The sesame seed yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the sesame seed harvested area in Vietnam shrank modestly to X ha, falling by -2% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 29% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the sesame seed harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports from Vietnam
In 2022, overseas shipments of sesame seed were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. In general, exports posted a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 643%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sesame seed exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 678%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China (X tons) was the main destination for sesame seed exports from Vietnam, accounting for a 87% share of total exports. Moreover, sesame seed exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China totaled +19.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+18.1% per year) and Japan (-24.3% per year).
In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for sesame seed exports from Vietnam, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 5% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 2.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to China stood at +30.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+12.1% per year) and Japan (-20.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average sesame seed export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sesame seed export price decreased by -4.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Taiwan (Chinese) (+11.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Sesame Seed Imports
Imports into Vietnam
Sesame seed imports into Vietnam expanded notably to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 10% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sesame seed imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 73%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons), India (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) were the main suppliers of sesame seed imports to Vietnam, together comprising 69% of total imports. Cambodia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Sudan, Bangladesh, Senegal, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +38.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X), India ($X) and Pakistan ($X) constituted the largest sesame seed suppliers to Vietnam, together comprising 70% of total imports. Cambodia, Burkina Faso, Brazil, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sudan, Ethiopia, Senegal and the United Arab Emirates lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.
Among the main suppliers, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +39.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average sesame seed import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -4.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a slight decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ethiopia ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
