Asphalted Paper Market Size in Vietnam

After two years of growth, the Vietnamese asphalted paper market decreased by -10.1% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, saw a noticeable increase. Asphalted paper consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard decreased by -15.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 165% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 341% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the main destinations of asphalted paper exports from Vietnam, together comprising 93% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +58.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the key foreign market for tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard exports from Vietnam, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 1.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Indonesia totaled +68.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+13.4% per year) and Cambodia (-12.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average asphalted paper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -27.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 163%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Venezuela (+24.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard decreased by -11.2% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 172%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asphalted paper imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 207% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, the United States (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of asphalted paper to Vietnam, with a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, asphalted paper imports from the United States exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the United States totaled +30.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (-0.3% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+70.0% per year).

In value terms, the United States ($X), South Korea ($X) and Italy ($X) constituted the largest asphalted paper suppliers to Vietnam, with a combined 68% share of total imports. China, Hong Kong SAR, the Philippines, Austria, Thailand, Japan and Turkey lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.

Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +58.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average asphalted paper import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the price for Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+11.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
