Worked Slate Market Size in Vietnam

The Vietnamese worked slate market rose to $X in 2022, surging by 2.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of worked slate exported from Vietnam declined sharply to X tons, falling by -29.4% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 359%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

In value terms, worked slate exports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 346%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

South Korea (X tons) was the main destination for worked slate exports from Vietnam, with a 82% share of total exports. Moreover, worked slate exports to South Korea exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the United States (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Slovenia (X tons), with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to South Korea was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-9.8% per year) and Slovenia (+23.9% per year).

In value terms, South Korea ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for worked slate exports from Vietnam, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Argentina, with a 0.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to South Korea was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-6.7% per year) and Argentina (+3.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average worked slate export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, worked slate export price increased by +87.1% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Slovenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+5.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Vietnam

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of worked slate, when their volume decreased by -7% to X tons. In general, imports showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, worked slate imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed pronounced growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 85%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest worked slate supplier to Vietnam, accounting for a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, worked slate imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, South Korea (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Pakistan (X tons), with a 2.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+11.9% per year) and Pakistan (+30.2% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of worked slate to Vietnam, comprising 82% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Italy, with a 1.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from China stood at +3.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Korea (+13.9% per year) and Italy (-8.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average worked slate import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 28%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+5.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
