The West African agricultural and forestry tractor market dropped sharply to $X in 2021, reducing by -25.1% against the previous year. Agricultural and forestry tractor exports dropped sharply to X units in 2021, falling by -47.6% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, agricultural and forestry tractor exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal represented the key exporter of agricultural and forestry tractors in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was approx. 50% of total exports in 2021. Nigeria (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mauritania (X units), Niger (X units), Togo (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units). All these countries together held approx. 50% share of total exports.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the agricultural and forestry tractors exports, with a CAGR of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritania (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Niger (-7.4%), Nigeria (-12.1%), Togo (-14.3%) and Burkina Faso (-21.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Senegal (+42 p.p.), Mauritania (+11 p.p.), Nigeria (+5.3 p.p.) and Niger (+2.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Burkina Faso saw its share reduced by -5.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest agricultural and forestry tractor supplier in Western Africa, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Niger, with an 8.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Senegal amounted to +5.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritania (+21.3% per year) and Niger (+1.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+16.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Agricultural And Forestry Tractors

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X units of agricultural and forestry tractors were imported in Western Africa; which is down by -18.7% against 2020 figures. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +48.2% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 82%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, agricultural and forestry tractor imports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 64%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X units), distantly followed by Nigeria (X units), Mali (X units), Guinea (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Senegal (X units) were the main importers of agricultural and forestry tractors, together comprising 88% of total imports. Benin (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Mali, Guinea and Benin, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Guinea, with a CAGR of +21.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Guinea (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
