The West African aluminium alloy wire market dropped slightly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption recorded a mild reduction. Exports in Western Africa

Aluminium alloy wire exports shrank significantly to X tons in 2022, with a decrease of -32.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 188%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium alloy wire exports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 82%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Burkina Faso represented the major exporter of aluminium alloy wire in Western Africa, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), committing a 25% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Burkina Faso was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminium alloy wire exports, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012 to 2022. Ghana (-1.7%) and Nigeria (-50.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Burkina Faso (+56 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Ghana saw its share reduced by -53.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest aluminium alloy wire supplier in Western Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 19% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ghana totaled -1.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (-11.5% per year) and Nigeria (-50.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a deep reduction. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (-0.2%).

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, imports of aluminium alloy wire in Western Africa soared to X tons, picking up by 35% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +79.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented roughly 78% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together creating an 11% share of total imports. The following importers - Mali (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - together made up 6.6% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aluminium alloy wire in Western Africa, comprising 46% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 16% share.

In Nigeria, aluminium alloy wire imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+13.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 31% against the previous year. Import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, aluminium alloy wire import price increased by +97.9% against 2016 indices. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
