In 2021, the amount of aluminium bars, rods and profiles exported in Western Africa surged to X tons, picking up by 204% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a buoyant expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, aluminium bar exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 162% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons) represented the major exporter of aluminium bars, rods and profiles, achieving 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Liberia (X tons) and Senegal (X tons), together generating a 22% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Sierra Leone (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminium bars, rods and profiles exports, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Liberia (+32.0%), Senegal (+24.0%) and Sierra Leone (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-2.2%) and Togo (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Ghana (+52 p.p.), Liberia (+8.7 p.p.) and Senegal (+5.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Togo (-12.8 p.p.) and Nigeria (-12.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest aluminium bar supplier in Western Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Liberia, with an 11% share.

In Ghana, aluminium bar exports expanded at an average annual rate of +41.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Senegal (+14.9% per year) and Liberia (+19.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -23.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a pronounced setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of aluminium bars, rods and profiles decreased by -53.5% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 60%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, aluminium bar imports fell remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 54% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Benin (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) were the main importers of aluminium bars, rods and profiles, together committing 87% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +23.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Cabo Verde and Benin, which together accounted for a further 28%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cabo Verde, with a CAGR of +34.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 33% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed modest growth. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cabo Verde (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
