The West African market for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers reduced to $X in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a resilient expansion. After two years of growth, shipments abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -13% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed modest growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 145% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 186% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the one major exporters of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, namely Nigeria, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers exports, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (+95 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) also remains the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container supplier in Western Africa.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +45.1%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 79% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Nigeria.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers decreased by -0.1% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 38%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, imports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 49%. Over the period under review, imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Imports by Country

Guinea (X units) and Togo (X units) represented the largest importers of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers in 2022, reaching approx. 26% and 26% of total imports, respectively. Ghana (X units) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (12%), Cote d'Ivoire (6.8%) and Cabo Verde (5.4%). Sierra Leone (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Ghana (with a CAGR of +60.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest aluminium cask, drum, can, box and similar container importing markets in Western Africa were Guinea ($X), Togo ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Cabo Verde and Sierra Leone lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.

Among the main importing countries, Ghana, with a CAGR of +62.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, shrinking by -6.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Cabo Verde ($X per unit) and Senegal ($X per unit), while Sierra Leone ($X per unit) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
