Exports by Country
Togo represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X kg, which reached 69% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X kg), making up a 29% share of total exports. Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the alums exports, with a CAGR of -5.1% from 2012 to 2022. Nigeria (-17.0%) and Ghana (-38.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Togo (+53 p.p.) and Nigeria (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ghana (-34.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Togo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Ghana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022.
Togo, with a CAGR of -15.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -57.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the export price increased by 202% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, the amount of alums imported in Western Africa surged to X tons, increasing by 34% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports showed buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 209% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, alums imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 87%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), generating a 7% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the alums imports, with a CAGR of +33.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+4.2%) and Senegal (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+64 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-6.4 p.p.) and Nigeria (-16.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest alums importing markets in Western Africa were Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 87% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +9.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -24.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 67% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
