In value terms, ammonium sulphate exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 393%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Mali (X tons) was the key exporter of ammonium sulphate, creating 81% of total exports. Togo (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritania (4.8%).
Exports from Mali decreased at an average annual rate of -12.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Togo (+18.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mauritania (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo, Mali and Mauritania increased by +14, +9.1 and +3.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mali ($X) remains the largest ammonium sulphate supplier in Western Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Mali amounted to -16.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+15.5% per year) and Mauritania (-11.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -20.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (-2.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of ammonium sulphate, when their volume decreased by -18.9% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw moderate growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, ammonium sulphate imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 89% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), mixing up a 7.2% share of total imports. Togo (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest ammonium sulphate importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Mali ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 90% share of total imports.
Nigeria, with a CAGR of +19.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
