Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a precipitous decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 66% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, ammonia exports reduced modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 97%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Nigeria dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 97% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ammonia exports from Nigeria stood at -36.4%. Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Senegal (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest ammonia supplier in Western Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
In Nigeria, ammonia exports declined by an average annual rate of -41.7% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -11.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+8.0%).
Ammonia Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of anhydrous ammonia increased by 4.2% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 793%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ammonia imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 849%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Senegal (X tons) represented roughly 99% of total imports in 2022.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anhydrous ammonia imports, with a CAGR of +85.2% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Senegal (+92 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anhydrous ammonia in Western Africa.
In Senegal, ammonia imports increased at an average annual rate of +67.2% over the period from 2012-2022.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, falling by -22.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 64% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major supplying country, the average price level is determined by prices for Senegal.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Senegal amounted to -9.8% per year.
