For the fourth consecutive year, the West African market for anise, badian, fennel and coriander recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 12% to $X in 2022. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +76.8% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Production of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander in Western Africa
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The country with the largest volume of anise, badian, fennel and coriander production was Sierra Leone (X tons), comprising approx. 59% of total volume. Moreover, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production in Sierra Leone exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Nigeria (X tons), twofold. Niger (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 9.5% share.
In Sierra Leone, anise, badian, fennel and coriander production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+2.0% per year) and Niger (+3.1% per year).
Exports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Exports in Western Africa
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of anise, badian, fennel and coriander decreased by -24.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports dropped dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 117% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Sierra Leone prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), making up a 7.3% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Sierra Leone was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports, with a CAGR of +28.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+23.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+19.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Sierra Leone (+26 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Sierra Leone ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in Western Africa, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 7.4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Sierra Leone stood at +38.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+18.4% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+14.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Export price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, anise, badian, fennel and coriander export price increased by +140.9% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+8.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Anise, Badian, Fennel And Coriander
Imports in Western Africa
Anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports rose rapidly to X tons in 2022, increasing by 15% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 111%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 95%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 67% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (4.8%). Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports into Nigeria stood at +24.2%. At the same time, Togo (+87.5%), Ghana (+28.3%) and Senegal (+7.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +87.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+22 p.p.), Ghana (+9.9 p.p.) and Togo (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-8.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 88% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Togo, which accounted for a further 1.2%.
Togo, with a CAGR of +45.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -18.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 56%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
