Antibiotic Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, the West African antibiotic market decreased by -7.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. After three years of decline, overseas shipments of antibiotics increased by 116% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep slump. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, faced a abrupt descent. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 72% of total exports. Niger (X kg) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 21% share, followed by Sierra Leone (5.5%).

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the antibiotics exports, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Niger (+10.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Sierra Leone (-25.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+62 p.p.) and Niger (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone saw its share reduced by -22.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) remains the largest antibiotic supplier in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Sierra Leone ($X), with a 23% share of total exports.

In Ghana, antibiotic exports expanded at an average annual rate of +18.2% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Sierra Leone (-18.8% per year) and Niger (+6.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -32.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 49%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of antibiotics in Western Africa totaled X tons, growing by 4.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports saw a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, antibiotic imports contracted sharply to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 31%. Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +6.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review.

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -29.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
