Apple Juice Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the West African apple juice market, when its value decreased by -1% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed tangible growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Apple Juice Production in Western Africa

In value terms, apple juice production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 101%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

Apple juice exports expanded remarkably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 8.8% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 762%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, apple juice exports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 533% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria was the largest exporter of apple juice (single strength) in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 77% of total exports in 2021. Ghana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Burkina Faso (X tons). All these countries together held near 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to apple juice exports from Nigeria stood at +4.0%. At the same time, Ghana (+26.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +26.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Burkina Faso (-24.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Ghana and Burkina Faso increased by +53, +12 and +8.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest apple juice supplier in Western Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Burkina Faso ($X), with a 13% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, apple juice exports declined by an average annual rate of -6.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Burkina Faso (-26.4% per year) and Ghana (+9.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -10.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (-2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, approx. X tons of apple juice (single strength) were imported in Western Africa; jumping by 26% on 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 90%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, apple juice imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 118%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the major importer of apple juice (single strength) in Western Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 46% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Mali (X tons), together creating a 37% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons), Guinea (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+59.1%), Guinea (+28.1%), Senegal (+23.8%), Liberia (+22.8%), Cabo Verde (+17.8%) and Nigeria (+13.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +59.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Mali (+7.4 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+3.9 p.p.), Guinea (+2.3 p.p.), Senegal (+2.1 p.p.) and Liberia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest apple juice importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), with a combined 79% share of total imports. Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Liberia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Among the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +61.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -28.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Liberia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
