Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, exports of apples in Western Africa soared to X tons, increasing by 128% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt contraction. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, apple exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 120%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Ghana was the main exporter of apples in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 51% of total exports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Sierra Leone (11%) and Cote d'Ivoire (5.2%). The following exporters - Togo (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to apple exports from Ghana stood at -2.3%. At the same time, Mauritania (+36.1%) and Senegal (+27.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +36.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-3.3%), Cote d'Ivoire (-9.1%), Sierra Leone (-20.4%) and Togo (-36.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+35 p.p.), Senegal (+21 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) and Mauritania (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Sierra Leone and Togo saw its share reduced by -9.8% and -50.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest apple supplying countries in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 72% share of total exports. Sierra Leone, Mauritania, Togo and Nigeria lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 20%.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +28.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -47.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 76%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+12.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of apples decreased by -2% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +51.7% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 37% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, apple imports totaled $X in 2021. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +37.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Nigeria (X tons) represented the key importer of apples, achieving 36% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 47% share of total imports. The following importers - Guinea (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) - each reached a 7.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Guinea (with a CAGR of +30.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest apple importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Senegal ($X) and Mauritania ($X), together comprising 68% of total imports.

Nigeria, with a CAGR of +21.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 25% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
