In general, exports saw a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 179% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, carbon for electrical purposes exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a noticeable slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 719%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mali represented the key exporter of articles of graphite or other carbon for electrical purposes in Western Africa, with the volume of exports amounting to X kg, which was approx. 76% of total exports in 2022. Senegal (X kg) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (5%). Ghana (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 193% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+37.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of articles of graphite or other carbon for electrical purposes decreased by -3.5% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after seven years of growth. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 142%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, carbon for electrical purposes imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 92% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), making up a 5.8% share of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of graphite or other carbon for electrical purposes imports, with a CAGR of +9.1% from 2012 to 2022. Mali (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period.
