Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of articles of gut, goldbeater’s skin, bladders or tendons. Nigeria (+98 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Imports in Western Africa

In general, imports, however, enjoyed perceptible growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 166%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, articles of gut imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 174%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Senegal represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 72% of total imports. Nigeria (X kg) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Ghana (X kg). All these countries together took approx. 20% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) and Mali (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of gut, goldbeater’s skin, bladders or tendons imports, with a CAGR of +18.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+5.2%) and Nigeria (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mali (-19.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+54 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-1.6 p.p.) and Mali (-23.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. In value terms, Senegal ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 86% share of total imports. Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 12%.

Ghana, with a CAGR of +14.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 191% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+38.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
