Articles Of Zinc Market Size in Western Africa

The West African articles of zinc market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.6% against 2019 indices. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The total production indicated a notable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -6.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of articles of zinc increased by 47% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after five years of decline. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 359% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, articles of zinc exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 1,160%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Senegal dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X kg), Togo (X kg) and Nigeria (X kg) - together made up 8.7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to articles of zinc exports from Senegal stood at -12.0%. Nigeria (-4.6%), Togo (-7.8%) and Sierra Leone (-12.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Senegal (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest articles of zinc supplier in Western Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Togo ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Sierra Leone, with a 6.8% share.

In Senegal, articles of zinc exports shrank by an average annual rate of -10.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Togo (+9.4% per year) and Sierra Leone (-19.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 30% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a slight increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 174% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, purchases abroad of articles of zinc increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after four years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 122%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, articles of zinc imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 53%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Ghana represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 46% of total imports. Nigeria (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Sierra Leone (7.9%), Guinea (7%) and Mali (4.7%). The following importers - Mauritania (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - each finished at a 6.3% share of total imports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the articles of zinc imports, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Sierra Leone (+45.0%), Guinea (+44.1%) and Mauritania (+28.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-4.2%), Mali (-18.1%) and Senegal (-25.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Mauritania increased by +45, +7.7, +6.8 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Nigeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 58% of total imports.

Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +54.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -18.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per ton), while Guinea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
