In 2021, artificial and colloidal graphite exports in Western Africa shrank remarkably to X tons, waning by -94.8% on 2020. In general, exports, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 19,108%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports shrank sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,564% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Ghana dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mali (X kg), achieving a 4.9% share of total exports.

Exports from Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +24.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+42.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +42.4% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mali increased by +3.4 percentage points.

In value terms, Mali ($X) emerged as the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplier in Western Africa, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mali amounted to +48.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 271% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Ghana totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+4.6%).

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, imports of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Western Africa soared to X tons, jumping by 25% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports posted notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 97%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports enjoyed mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 53% of total imports. Gambia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together took near 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Senegal (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - each reached a 4.1% share of total imports.

Ghana was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations imports, with a CAGR of +10.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Gambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.2%) and Senegal (-7.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ghana increased by +27 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Western Africa, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Nigeria ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 6.2% share.

In Ghana, artificial and colloidal graphite imports increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Nigeria (-5.7% per year) and Senegal (-4.6% per year).

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Gambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
