Artificial guts exports dropped sharply to X tons in 2022, declining by -16.2% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 1,701% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial guts exports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 578%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Togo represented the main exporter of artificial guts (sausage skins) in Western Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X kg, which was near 77% of total exports in 2022. Nigeria (X kg) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (8.4%).

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial guts (sausage skins) exports, with a CAGR of +38.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Senegal (+12.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Nigeria (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Togo (+70 p.p.) and Senegal (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-46.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Senegal ($X), Togo ($X) and Nigeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +24.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 12% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 112%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of artificial guts (sausage skins), when their volume decreased by -41.9% to X tons. Overall, imports saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 836%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial guts imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 354% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Niger (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) represented roughly 91% of total imports in 2022. Sierra Leone (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritania (with a CAGR of +83.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X), Ghana ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 72% of total imports.

Mauritania, with a CAGR of +74.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
