Asparagus Market Size in Western Africa

The West African asparagus market dropped to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate a noticeable descent. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Asparagus Production in Western Africa

In value terms, asparagus production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 7.7%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Nigeria (X tons) remains the largest asparagus producing country in Western Africa, accounting for 50% of total volume. Moreover, asparagus production in Nigeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mali (X tons), threefold. Senegal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Nigeria stood at +2.0%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Mali (+2.3% per year) and Senegal (+2.0% per year).

Asparagus Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, after five years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of asparagus, when their volume decreased by -6.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 580%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 591% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

Nigeria dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2022. Ghana (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the asparagus exports, with a CAGR of +28.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+18.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Nigeria (+65 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) remains the largest asparagus supplier in Western Africa, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

In Nigeria, asparagus exports increased at an average annual rate of +22.6% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 34%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Ghana amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in Western Africa

Asparagus imports plummeted to X tons in 2022, waning by -32% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports saw a perceptible slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 117%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 113% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Togo (X tons) represented roughly 85% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X tons), mixing up a 7.7% share of total imports. Cabo Verde (X kg) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +56.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of total imports. Senegal and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +48.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the import price increased by 282% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
