In value terms, automotive lighting production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +61.1% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 36%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of automotive lighting exported in Western Africa declined markedly to X units, which is down by -38% compared with 2020. In general, exports saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 188%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, automotive lighting exports rose modestly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +54.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Nigeria prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 75% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Guinea (X units) and Benin (X units), together creating a 10% share of total exports. The following exporters - Sierra Leone (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Ghana (X units) - together made up 9.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to automotive lighting exports from Nigeria stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Guinea (+26.0%), Benin (+12.0%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-5.0%) and Sierra Leone (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, Guinea, Benin and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +29, +5.3, +3.3 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest automotive lighting supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Sierra Leone ($X) and Ghana ($X), together comprising 97% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Sierra Leone, with a CAGR of +12.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, growing by 65% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 520%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Sierra Leone ($X per unit), while Guinea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Sierra Leone (+20.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, supplies from abroad of automotive lighting increased by 68% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports saw a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 140% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, automotive lighting imports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 216% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the key importer of automotive lighting in Western Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was near 54% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Senegal (X units), Cote d'Ivoire (X units) and Guinea (X units), together mixing up a 39% share of total imports. Nigeria (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to automotive lighting imports into Ghana stood at +12.5%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+18.4%) and Senegal (+18.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +18.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Guinea (-2.0%) and Nigeria (-14.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+16 p.p.), Senegal (+8.6 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guinea and Nigeria saw its share reduced by -13.2% and -17.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported automotive lighting in Western Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to -3.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (+14.2% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+7.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, reducing by -37% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
