Avocado Market Size in Western Africa

The West African avocado market dropped to $X in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Avocado Production in Western Africa

In value terms, avocado production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of avocado production, comprising approx. 79% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Cote d'Ivoire exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ghana (X tons), fourfold.

The average avocado yield totaled X tons per ha in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 1.9%. Over the period under review, the avocado yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of avocados production in Western Africa dropped slightly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1.3% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Avocado Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas shipments of avocados decreased by -3.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 152%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, avocado exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 192%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 85% of total exports in 2022. Mauritania (X tons) held a 4.8% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Senegal (4.5%). Ghana (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to avocado exports from Cote d'Ivoire stood at +22.6%. At the same time, Mauritania (+37.4%) and Ghana (+16.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +37.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Senegal (-12.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+48 p.p.) and Mauritania (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Senegal (-52.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest avocado supplier in Western Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with a 16% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, avocado exports increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritania (+42.7% per year) and Ghana (+34.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 18% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritania ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Avocado Imports

Imports in Western Africa

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of avocados decreased by -24% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.0% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 69% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 178%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

Burkina Faso dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 81% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritania (X tons), creating an 8.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons) and Niger (X tons) - together made up 7% of total imports.

Imports into Burkina Faso increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritania (+66.8%), Niger (+65.5%) and Cabo Verde (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +66.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritania, Niger and Cabo Verde increased by +8.6, +3 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, the largest avocado importing markets in Western Africa were Cabo Verde ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Niger ($X), together accounting for 68% of total imports.

Niger, with a CAGR of +67.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 100%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cabo Verde ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
