In 2022, exports of babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) in Western Africa skyrocketed to X units, picking up by 37% compared with the previous year. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 114%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, baby garment exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 278% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Benin prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2022. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Niger (X units) and Ghana (X units). All these countries together held approx. 18% share of total exports. Togo (X units) and Nigeria (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Benin was also the fastest-growing in terms of the babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) exports, with a CAGR of +98.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Niger (-2.8%), Cote d'Ivoire (-11.6%), Ghana (-13.3%) and Togo (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Benin (+69 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Niger, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire and Togo saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -15.9%, -19.1% and -28.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Benin ($X) emerged as the largest baby garment supplier in Western Africa, comprising 35% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9.8% share.

In Benin, baby garment exports increased at an average annual rate of +35.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+14.5% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (-13.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, declining by -61.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 97%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per unit), while Benin ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Western Africa

Baby garment imports skyrocketed to X units in 2022, picking up by 38% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 132% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, baby garment imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a pronounced increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 40%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Senegal (X units) and Nigeria (X units) dominates imports structure, together comprising 74% of total imports. Benin (X units) took a 6.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (5%) and Cote d'Ivoire (4.9%). The following importers - Mali (X units) and Burkina Faso (X units) - each recorded a 5.5% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mali (with a CAGR of +35.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported babies’ garments and clothing accessories (knitted or crocheted) in Western Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Mali, with a 5.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +28.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Senegal (+21.6% per year) and Mali (+11.2% per year).
